Home tutor is a term applied to both employed (govies) and other tutors (usually parent/guardians) of students on School of the Air.

All ASSOA students (including dual enrolled students) must have an identified tutor as an essential element of the distance education teaching used by this school. Supervision is required for a minimum of four hours per day. We recommend that this supervision occurs in prime learning time in the morning. The tutor works with the child/children in the preparation, interpretation and understanding of the correspondence material. In effect, tutors are the teacher’s eyes, ears and hands in the child’s classroom. Tutors are also responsible for marking student work and providing feedback to the teacher.

Tutors can be either a parent/guardian or an employed person. It is the responsibility of the family to appoint a tutor should they choose to do so. All employed tutors wishing to work with ASSOA children at school must have a valid police check or blue card that has been sighted by the Principal. Tutors are welcome to call or visit the school at any time to discuss any issues.

All home tutors are invited to participate in professional development sessions organised by the Assistant Principal. Govies also have the opportunity to participate in the organisation of the Govies Muster and contribute to the Govies Gazette.

Communication

Communication between governesses is encouraged. This is done through emails, the Govies Gazette and through a blog site and is especially important when organising the Govies Muster. When a new govie is employed, please let the Govies Coordinator know through the ASSOA office.

Professional Development sessions

These sessions are available to all home tutors and are used to share ideas and valuable teaching tips/classroom organisation ideas to assist with tutoring. Session times are published in Morning Messages.

Govies Muster

The Govies Muster is an annual event organised by ASSOA govies, traditionally held on the Friday night of the Alice Springs Show weekend. All monies raised go to the students of the Alice Springs School of the Air via the P&F.

Govies Gazette

The Govies Gazette is a monthly publication put together by the Gazette Editor and distributed to govies via email. The publication is a communication tool to share useful educational information and to get to know other govies working with ASSOA students.
