Alcoota Station

W A Turner commenced to occupy this country in 1920. He prospered by dint of hard work and experience. By 1933 he had developed substantial improvements, including a homestead comprising two stone buildings with interconnecting verandah and bed floor. Government authorities at this time urged Turner to change to sheep as the beef market had collapsed, but Turner stuck to cattle. In 1958, Alcoota was transferred to PL Puckridge and C. D. Leahy, then to Puckridge solely.

The Webb brothers bought Alcoota in 1971 and it was managed by Tom Webb. In 1974 Ned Turner negotiated with Tom Webb for an excision and he founded the Engawala Community with the help of the Finke River Mission. On March 18th, 1993, the Engawala Community bought their land back. From the few traditional owners at the beginning, the Community has grown to 130 people. Alcoota is currently managed by Christopher Nott and his family.
